Decode a UPI QR Privately in Your Browser

Before you pay a QR code you were sent, see who it actually pays.

This runs in your browser. Nothing you type leaves this page.

The picture is read on your device. Nothing is uploaded.

What this does

It reads a UPI QR code and shows you the UPI ID it actually pays. This matters because the name shown inside a QR is typed by whoever generated it, so a code can carry any name at all. The UPI ID is the part that decides where the money goes.

How to use it

  1. 1

Upload, paste, or photograph the QR code you were sent.

  2. 2

Read the UPI ID it actually pays, not the name printed beside it.

  3. 3

Check that the ID matches the person or shop you meant to pay.

You get: the UPI ID, name and amount hidden inside the code.

When this is useful

Use it before paying a code that arrived over WhatsApp, or one stuck over another code at a stall. The name inside a QR is typed by whoever made it, so a code can carry any name at all. The UPI ID is the part that decides where the money goes.

  • The name printed beside a code is set by whoever printed it, and can say anything.
  • Only the UPI ID inside the code decides where the money goes.
  • You cannot see that by looking, so check any code you did not stick up yourself.

How QR stickers get swapped at a counter

The oldest trick with a payment QR is the simplest one: print your own code, walk into a shop, and stick it over theirs. Nobody looks twice, because one QR looks exactly like another and the shopkeeper is watching the customer rather than the wall. The name printed on the sticker is set by whoever printed it, so it can say anything at all. The only part that decides where money goes is the UPI ID inside the code, and you cannot see that by looking at it. That is what this page is for, and it is worth doing on any code you did not stick up yourself.

Questions

The name in the code matches the shop. Is it safe?

Not on its own. The name is a free text field set by whoever generated the code, so it can say anything and a matching one proves nothing. Check the UPI ID itself, and check the name your own UPI app shows after you scan, because that one comes from the bank rather than from the sticker.

What should I look for?

The handle after the @ tells you which bank or app the ID belongs to. If a shop you know banks elsewhere, ask before paying.

Is my screenshot uploaded anywhere?

No. The image is read in your browser and never leaves it.

How do I get the UPI ID out of a QR code?

Upload the image above, or take a photo of the code. It is read in this browser and the UPI ID appears underneath. Nothing is uploaded and nothing is stored.

Can this pay the code for me?

No, and it never will. This only reads. Paying happens in your own UPI app, where you get to see the name your bank shows for that ID before you approve, which is a check this page cannot do for you.

Can I get someone bank details from their UPI ID?

No, and that is the point of a UPI ID. It is an address that money can be sent to and nothing more. It does not reveal an account number, a balance, or a statement, to you or to anyone else.
